The Skyline Hawks hung tough with a good Central Falcons team into the third quarter, but eventually the Falcons were able to pull away for a 48-13 victory at Central High School.
The Falcons started the scoring with 7:48 left in the first quarter as Kyle Clanton took a pitch and ran it into the endzone from 12 yards out. The Hawks blocked the extra point attempt, to limit the lead to 6-0.
On the next series, the Hawks got a big play on a short pass that Tucker Fortney turned into a 22 yard gain. However, the drive came to an end when Central's Varsey Bright intercepted a Ryan Scott pass.
Central added another score on the following series, with one pass and then 8 consecutive runs concluding with a 16 yard reverse by Clanton for a touchdown. Clanton also caught the 2-point conversion to put the Falcons up 14-0.
The Hawks moved the ball well on their next possession but were not able to score. Quentin Diggs had 12 yards rushing on that drive, and Scott completed two passes to Matt Rutherford and one to Louie Garcia. The Hawks did get an excellent punt from Ryan Scott, who put it out of bounds at the Central 5 yard line.
Central again moved the ball quickly down the field, but on first and 10 from the Skyline 30, the Falcons threw deep and Laterrian Barber came up with the interception for the Hawks to stop the Central possession.
Skyline started on their own 3 yard line, Scott hooked up with Garcia for a first down out to the 13 yard line. On the next play, Scott dropped back to pass, and scrambled backwards, and then to his left, looking like he might lose major yardage as the Falcons pursued. But somehow Scott managed to fire it out to Matt Rutherford near midfield for a 35 yard completion. After a few incomplete passes, Scott again looked deep, and picked up a pass interference penalty against the Central defender. Another big play on the drive involved a middle screen to Diggs, who converted it into an 18 yard gain. The final two plays of the drive were an 11 yard pass from Scott to Trenton King, and then a 9 yard pass again to King for a touchdown. The XP conversion by Douglas Cummings cut Central's lead to 14-7 with 21 seconds left in the half.
The Hawks received the 2nd half kickoff and cut even further into the Central lead. Ryan Scott kept the ball on a read option and scampered 45 yards down the field to the 30 yard line of the Falcons. A pass to King brought the Hawks to the 20. Facing 4th and 6 from the 16, Scott completed a 7 yard pass to Rutherford to set up 1st and goal. On 3rd and goal, Scott flipped a pass to Diggs for the 1 yard touchdown. The XP was no good, and the score was Central 14, Skyline 13 with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
Central ran the ball on 25 of their last 26 plays, and the Hawks could not do much to stop the Falcons. Diggs had a 19 yard gain for the Hawks on the next drive, but other than that, the Hawks could not answer the Central scoring production, leading to the 48-13 final.
The Hawks will have their home opener next Friday against Broadway, with the game starting at 7:00.
