In a game where neither team took a lead of more than a touchdown, Brentsville scored with 10:29 left in the 4th quarter and held the Hawks scoreless the rest of the way to earn a 22-21 victory in Nokesville.
Both teams suffered the turnover bug throughout the game, and Skyline started things off on their first play from scrimmage, giving up a fumble and setting the Tigers up at the Hawks 21 yard line. J.C. Wilbanks made Skyline pay by running it in from 15 yards out to put Brentsville up 6-0.
The Hawks struck right back on their next possession, with Ryan Scott completing passes to three different receivers on the march downfield. Scott then kept the ball on the read option and ran it 48 yards for a touchdown, putting Skyline up 7-6 with 8:25 left in the first quarter.
Brentsville returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Skyline 35 before being stopped by a touchdown-saving tackle by Kyle McHugh. The Tigers could not capitalize, and turned the ball over on downs.
After a pair of possessions with only 1 total first down, the Hawks started their next possession at their own 34. Quentin Diggs carried the ball 5 times for 28 yards on the drive, and Scott connected with both Trenton King and Louie Garcia through the air, before rushing 21 yards up the middle for his 2nd touchdown and putting the Hawks up 14-6.
Brentsville moved the ball all the way down to the Skyline 6 yard line, but then lost a fumble to the Hawks to end the drive. Skyline could only muster one first down on their next drive, and after a punt of only ten yards, Brentsville started their next series on the Skyline 25 yard line. Brentsville only needed one play to tie it up as Christyan Jenkins ran it in from there. The successful conversion pass tied it up at 14 with 2:39 left in the 2nd quarter.
The third quarter started with a turnover on downs for Brentsville, giving Skyline the ball on the Tiger 33 yard line. But the Hawks came away with no points after Jared Obermeyer stepped in front of a Skyline pass in the end zone to come up with the interception and touchback.
Things remained scoreless for the rest of the quarter until Skyline moved the ball down the field with a 41 yard pass from Scott to Garcia and four runs by Diggs totaling 34 yards. Ryan Scott ran it in for his third rushing touchdown of the night and the Hawks were up 21-14 with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brentsville was not behind for long, as they kept it on the ground, and on the 5th run in a row, Alex Whitely took it in from 12 yards out to pull it to 21-20 awaiting the conversion. The Tigers chose to run it in for two, and Wilbanks was successful, putting Brentsville up 22-21.
Skyline had one more chance to retake the lead, but on third and goal from the nine yard line, the snap was fumbled, giving the ball to the Tigers. Brentsville ran the ball 12 times in a row, running out the clock and preserving the victory.
Skyline falls to 4-5 with the loss and will host Warren County on Friday Night. Brentsville improves to 3-6 and hosts Manassas Park in their regular season finale.
