|Skyline High School||14|
GAME SUMMARYThe Skyline Hawks made another valiant comeback effort, but eventually fell just short as they fell to the James Wood Colonels by a final score of 20-14 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Winchester. The game started off well for Skyline, as they forced the Colonels into a three-and-out on their first possession. The Hawks also had initial trouble with the wet conditions, losing yardage on a fumbled snap on the first offensive play of the game. However, on a 3rd and 18, Chase Tasker found Caleb Reedy in stride down the left sideline for a 64 yard touchdown reception, and the Hawks were up 7-0 with 8:53 left in the first quarter. James Wood was moving the ball well on their next possession, but on the 15th play of their drive, Ty Clingerman came up with a big interception to give the ball back to the Hawks. Skyline was able to force fumbles from James Wood on their next two possessions. The first one came on a quarterback sack by Bogdan Ion. The second one was recovered by David Carter. Unfortunately, the Hawks could not take advantage of either turnover, and with 2:39 left in the first half, William Crowder ran it in from 5 yards out. The conversion pass failed, leaving the Hawks up 7-6 at the half. Neither team got much going on the first few possessions of the third quarter, but with 3:20 left James Wood was able to take the lead when quarterback Carson Hoberg kept it himself on a 7 yard touchdown run. That put the Colonels up 13-7. It did not take the Colonels long to extend their lead as on their next possession, Crowder broke off a 44 yard touchdown run down the right sideline, putting James Wood up 20-7. It was looking like the score might end that way after Tasker was intercepted in the endzone midway through the 4th quarter, but the Colonel defender tried running it out and got stopped at the 3. On the 2nd play from scrimmage, the snap went over the head of the James Wood quarterback, and Wyatt Spiker covered it up for a Hawks touchdown, bringing Skyline back to within 20-14 with 5:02 left in the game. The Hawks were able to force a turnover on downs on the Colonels next possession, giving them a chance to tie or win on their final possession. On fourth down and 4 from the Hawk 48, Tasker went deep and the Colonels were called for pass interference, giving Skyline the ball at the James Wood 37. Passes to Wood, Reedy, and Barber moved the ball down to the 8 yard line with 33.5 seconds left in the game. Two pass incompletions and a fumbled snap set up 4th and goal from the 13 with 1.2 seconds left. Tasker threw into the end zone on the final play, but Jackson Turner came down with the interception to seal the game for the Colonels. The Hawks will host Handley this Friday night at 7:00.
