Hawks Nip Rams In Football Thriller

Game Date
Sep 29, 2017

Skyline got out to an early lead and never trailed, but survived a scare from Strasburg before winning at home 28-26 on Friday night.

The Hawks got the scoring going on their opening drive, establishing the run with a healthy Quentin Diggs. After a Ryan Scott to Louie Garcia 20 yard pass on the first play of the drive, Skyline turned to the ground game, running on the last seven plays of the drive. Highlights included a 34 yard run by Garcia, and the 1 yard scoring plunge by Diggs, putting the Hawks up 7-0 with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

Strasburg's first drive was extended by a personal foul on the Hawks, but a Justin Jenkins sack on a 3rd down play near midfield forced the Rams to punt.

Skyline had no success on their next series, suffering an intentional grounding and a sack on consecutive plays, but Ryan Scott's 62 yard punt benefited from an excellent roll and flipped the field, forcing the Rams to start from their own 18 yard line.

Strasburg was moving the ball well on that drive, but Chase Hart's deep pass was intercepted by Ty Clingerman to end the scoring threat.

Each team had a possession with no serious scoring threat before the Hawks struck again. The big play of the drive was a 37 yard run by DIggs. Scott finished it off by finding Matt Rutherford for a 7 yard touchdown reception. After the PAT kick, the Hawks had a 14-0 lead with 7:12 left in the 2nd quarter.

Strasburg got one first down on their next drive on a 3rd down pass from Chase Hart to Brody Tomblin. Their next 3rd down play did not go as well as Kyle McHugh blitzed off the edge and sacked Hart to force a punt.

Skyline was moving the ball on their next drive behind runs from Diggs, and passes by Scott to Garcia and Laterrian Barber. After entering the red zone, a sack forced a long 3rd down attempt, and Scott's pass was intercepted by Tomblin.

The Hawks entered the halftime break up 14-0, and having outgained the Rams 228-56 in first half yardage.

Strasburg did get on the scoreboard in the third quarter, behind the running of Austin Miller and passes to Tomblin and Trevor Sager. Miller ran it in from 9 yards out, but the conversion pass failed, leaving Strasburg behind 14-6 with 4:42 left in the 3rd quarter.

Skyline struck right back, this time through the running and throwing of Ryan Scott. He connected with Nathan Abel for 23 yards and Matt Rutherford for 46 yards through the air, in addition to a 12 yard run to set up the scoring throw. From the 3 yard line, Scott hit Clingerman and with the PAT, the Hawks were up 21-6, with 1:32 left in the 3rd quarter.

Skyline could not enjoy the expanded lead for long though, as Sager took the ensuing kickoff, used some good blocks to get near the sideline and then outran the rest of the defenders down the sideline for the touchdown. This time the Rams 2-point conversion run was successful, and the Skyline lead was cut to 21-14 with 1:18 left in the 3rd.

Strasburg further narrowed the lead midway through the 4th quarter. Austin Miller was the man on that drive too, rushing for 24 yards and also picking up 22 yards receiving. He took it in from 4 yards out to cut the Hawks lead to 21-20 pending the 2 point attempt. Marcel Roy sacked Hart on the conversion attempt, so the Hawks held onto the lead with 5:34 left in the game.

Nothing much worked for either team on their next possessions, but Strasburg turned it over on downs deep in their own territory. Garcia had a 6 yard run on the first play, and then Diggs ran it in from 15 yards out to put the Hawks up 28-20 with 3:22 left.

Strasburg did not give up though, and facing a fourth and 8 from the Skyline 45 yard line, Hart hit Tomblin for the long touchdown throw to make it 28-26 pending the conversion. The Rams could not connect on the pass attempt, and the Hawks were able to preserve the victory.

Louie Garcia had 82 yards receiving and 78 yards rushing to lead the Hawks. Quentin Diggs, coming back from injury had 125 yards rushing, Matt Rutherford had 90 yards receiving, and Ryan Scott had 256 yards passing.

Skyline's record improves to 2-3, and Strasburg falls to 2-3.
