Varsity Football vs. Culpeper County

Game Date
Oct 5, 2018

The Skyline Hawks got down a couple of touchdowns early to a strong Culpeper County team, but then played them even the rest of the way, losing by a final score of 35-21.

Culpeper used the rushing game of Javae Colclough and Jalen Veeney to take a 14-0 lead with 4:15 left in the first quarter.

Just when it looked like Culpeper was going to run away with the game driving in Hawks territory, Ethan Gue picked up a botched snap and ran it all the way for a Skyline touchdown.  Nathan Abel caught a 2 pt conversion pass to cut the Culpeper lead to 14-8 with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Skyline attempted an onside kick which was recovered by Ty Clingerman, giving the Hawks another scoring opportunity.  A couple of runs by Clingerman, a personal foul on Culpeper, and an 11 yard pass to Anthony Domino set Douglas Cummings up for a 29 yard field goal, which he converted to cut the deficit to 14-11 with 9:53 left in the 2nd quarter.

Although Culpeper was able to add another touchdown on their next possession, they later fumbled deep in their own territory and Bogdan Ion recovered for the Hawks.  A couple of Blake Appleton passes to L.T. Barber and Domino set up another field goal for Cummings, this one of 32 yards which cut the Culpeper lead to 21-14, which was also the halftime score.

Culpeper extended their lead on a 64 yard run by Veeney.  And almost scored again on their next possession, but Caleb Reedy intercepted a Blue Devil pass in the endzone for a touchback.

Culpeper's final touchdown came when Nazier McDonald intercepted Chase Tasker and took it to the house putting the Blue Devils up 35-21 with 5:53 left.

But the Hawks did not give up.  Tasker went 5-6 completing passes on the next drive plus had a 15 yard carry down to the 1 yard line.  Clingerman ran it in from their for the final 35-21 margin.

The Hawks have a bye this week before traveling to William Monroe next week.
