WILLIAM MONROE: 17
The Hawks played even for the Dragons of William Monroe for much of the game before falling 17-8 in Stanardsville on Friday evening.
It was the Ty Clingerman show on the first drive for the Hawks as he carried the ball on the first five plays of the game, tallying 14 yards. The Hawks were forced to punt, and the Dragons took over at their own 34.
The Dragons countered behind the running of Dupree Rucker and the scrambling of quarterback Alex Kinsey. The Dragons finished off the drive when Kinsey scrambled for a 35 yard touchdown run to put William Monroe up 7-0 with 4:32 left in the first quarter.
Neither team got a lot going on their next possession, with David Carter blocking a William Monroe field goal to end the first quarter. It looked like the Hawks would not get much going on their next drive as well, but then Chase Tasker hit L.T. Barber on a 49 yard touchdown pass with 9:20 left in the second quarter. A fake on the extra point led to a 2 point conversion pass from Clingerman to Nathan Abel to put the Hawks up 8-7.
The Hawks defense was bend without breaking for the rest of the half, but finally gave up a 26 yard field goal late to give the Dragons a 10-8 halftime lead.
On the first drive of the 2nd half, Rucker again took over on the ground, with 7 carries for 40 yards, ending with a 4 yard touchdown run. That put the Dragons up 17-8, with 6:10 left in the 3rd quarter, and neither team scored the rest of the game. Bogdan Ion did have 6 carries for 25 yards in a drive at the end of the 3rd quarter and beginning of the 4th quarter to give the Hawks some momentum.
